Linux System Administration – 3 Month Practical Training Program

Month 1: Linux Fundamentals & System Administration

Module 1: Linux Fundamentals

  • Introduction to Linux and its distributions

  • Ubuntu and RHEL-based systems

  • Linux architecture and filesystem hierarchy

  • Essential Linux commands

  • File and directory management

  • Text processing and command-line utilities

  • SSH and remote server access

Practical: Install Linux, configure a server, connect through SSH, and perform everyday command-line operations.

Module 2: Users, Permissions & System Management

  • User and group management

  • File permissions and ownership

  • chmod, chown, chgrp, sudo

  • Processes and jobs

  • System monitoring using top, htop, ps, free, df

  • Services and systemd

  • Logs and journalctl

Practical: Create users, configure permissions, manage services, monitor resources, and troubleshoot common system issues.

Module 3: Package Management & Bash Scripting

  • APT and DNF package management

  • Installing, updating and removing software

  • Repositories and dependencies

  • Bash variables and command-line arguments

  • Conditions and loops

  • Functions and basic error handling

  • Writing administrative scripts

Practical: Create scripts for user management, backups, log analysis and server health checks.



Month 2: Networking, Security & Storage

Module 4: Linux Networking

  • TCP/IP fundamentals

  • IPv4, IPv6 and subnetting basics

  • IP addressing and routing

  • DNS and DHCP

  • ip, ss, ping, traceroute, dig, curl

  • Network troubleshooting

  • Basic NetworkManager configuration

Practical: Configure networking, troubleshoot connectivity and DNS issues, and analyze network connections.

Module 5: Linux Security

  • Linux security fundamentals

  • SSH key-based authentication

  • SSH hardening

  • sudo and least-privilege access

  • Firewall fundamentals

  • UFW / firewalld / nftables basics

  • SELinux and AppArmor fundamentals

  • Security updates and log analysis

Practical: Harden a Linux server, configure SSH and firewall rules, and troubleshoot security-related issues.


Module 6: Storage, Filesystems & Backup

  • Disk and partition management

  • ext4 and XFS

  • Mounting and /etc/fstab

  • LVM fundamentals

  • lsblk, fdisk, parted, df, du

  • Backup and recovery

  • tar and rsync

  • Cron and systemd timers

Practical: Create partitions and LVM volumes, configure persistent mounts, and automate backups.



Month 3: Containers, Automation & Monitoring

Module 7: Docker & Ansible

  • Virtualization and container concepts

  • Docker images and containers

  • Docker networking and volumes

  • Docker Compose

  • Introduction to Ansible

  • Inventory and SSH-based management

  • Ansible playbooks

  • Variables, templates and handlers

  • Automating Linux administration

Practical: Deploy a multi-container application and automate Linux server configuration using Ansible.


Module 8: Monitoring, Troubleshooting & Capstone Project

  • Linux troubleshooting methodology

  • Boot and service troubleshooting

  • journalctl, dmesg, lsof, strace, tcpdump

  • Server performance troubleshooting

  • Centralized logging concepts

  • Prometheus and Grafana fundamentals

  • Alerts and monitoring

  • Real-world troubleshooting scenarios

Capstone Project:

  • Build a small Linux server environment

  • Configure users, SSH and firewall

  • Configure storage and backups

  • Deploy an application using Docker

  • Automate configuration using Ansible

  • Monitor servers using Prometheus/Grafana

  • Troubleshoot intentionally introduced problems
